Spread the Word

The Times photo editor Mike Silva works closely with the Young Journalists Mentoring Program where high school students get hands on experiences with the journalism industry. Mike always supports young photographers and journalists in any way he can and goes out of his way to give advice and let anyone who wishes to learn the trade the opportunity to shadow staff photographers in the field. Recently, photographers Val Horvath, Jim Hudelson and myself assisted Mike with a YJMP class at LSUS and a fashion shoot on the campus. Each photographger took a small group and a model to shoot some fashion shots. We used available light and/or minimal flash use just to give the kids a feel for how the gear works and ways you can utilize lighting. Here's some shots of the kids in action.
