The Unexpected

I was sweating my way around downtown with parking patrol officer Ronny Howell this morning when I came upon Oscar Helton. The 81-year-old Shreveporter was heading right toward me on his way to the bank, and he was hard to miss with his white suit and matching hat. I quickly stopped and told him I wanted to snap his picture, and he was all about it. I asked him if he always dressed like that, and he smiled and said, "I'll dress up every day of the week if I feel like it!"

How did you do it? I'm a beginner and took a picture of an african american subject dressed in a white suit. The skin tone was a bit dull and the suit appeared to "glow". No details (buttons, etc) were visible.

I used the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. When I took the picture, it appeared from looking at the histogram that the picture was well exposed.
Any suggestions?
