Mosquito season

Spring is here and so it must be time for the start of assignments for stories about mosquitos.

Several days ago I met up with Dan Saxon, a biologist for Caddo Parish Animal and Mosquito Control, as he collected a sample jar from a "New Jersey Light Trap" early in the morning in Shreveport. The jar contained several mosquitos and crane flies.

Nothing too special, just a quick little interesting portrait with nice light........it doesn't take long to lift a jar out and screw on the lid......... I found it more interesting to see Saxon pull out mosquito books and some mosquito larvae from his truck for a "secondary" piece of art for the package. As Saxon described out all of the different stages of the larvae I made a few photos of the small dark specks.

Needless to say we do similar stories multiple times a year. I'm betting we will be shooting some of the baby chickens used as Sentinel Flocks around the parish to detect Eastern and St. Louis Encephalitis and the West Nile virus before summer is over.................

See ya' in a few weeks Mr. Saxon.

Is it me or did I get a sense that you think covering mosquitos is ho-hum? ;) I bet its as exciting as covering stories on pot holes in the streets or maybe stories on how hot it gets here in August! Which brings up the question: how often do you get to cover/shoot stories that really interest you? Or do you just take these opportunities to take really creative and interesting pics, like this one of Mr. Saxon?

Let's just say it is "challenging" to shoot the same each year and continue to make interesting photographs.

We are free to work on projects at any time, and yes a lot of those projects stem from personal interests or hobbies etc. The only issue with working on projects is squeezing time for the project between daily assignments. I discussed my last personal project (MLK's speech at Galilee) in an earlier blog.
